C - Best User Application: An application story highlighting the benefits of a product, system or service for use in hazardous areas
C1
Company: Hawke International
Product: Hawke Easy Access Enclosures
Created with increased productivity in mind, the radical sloped face design of the EA range reduces cost through unparalleled installation and inspection speeds.
User Application: The easy installation and inspection of the EA range has been exemplified in their use on the Buncefield Aviation Storage Terminal Rebuild Project. According to BPA’s Mark Dickinson: "The sloped face design of Hawke's Easy Access Enclosure exposed the terminals more and allowed for greater hand access so that we could terminate wiring much easier, and faster, than any other Enclosure we'd previously used.”

Company: Oteac Ltd
Application: Fire System Refurbishment
Oteac Limited is an international service company with over 30 years’ experience offering fire and gas detection, suppression systems and related design and engineering services to the oil, gas, renewables and marine sectors.
Our Client’s Challenge
The Operator’s North Sea platform was normally an unmanned installation, due to a production complication at one point in time, the normally unmanned platform went from receiving two maintenance visits a month to receiving three flights a day with personnel. The helideck was receiving more flights than a large manned platform usually receives.
With the necessity to transport a higher volume of personnel, the Helideck Certification Agency (HCA) required the operator to improve the fire-fighting coverage on the helideck and our client required immediate action.
Generally, an offshore platform would have several fire pumps capable of drawing thousands of litres of water. The normally unmanned installation did not have that facility available, therefore the firefighting system had to be standalone and self-sufficient.
Delivered solution
Oteac Ltd was commissioned to refurbish a major offshore operator’s helideck foam skid system, fitted with 4000-litre tanks and proof load tested to BS 7072. Two systems are employed on the platform and a third at onshore facility for staff training.
In the instance of a fire, these skids have the potential to deliver between 700 - 850 litres per minute for 5-6 minutes which provided a much more effective solution than the helideck's existing portable extinguishers. When tested at an onshore training facility, the fire was rapidly extinguished. The foam skid system is inspected annually and serviced with periodic tank pressure tests in accordance with the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) and Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 (PSSR).

Company: Petrotechnics
Product: Proscient 4.0
Proscient 4.0 is the first enterprise Operational Excellence software platform that delivers the practical benefits of digitalisation, Industry 4.0 and the IIoT, to drive significant improvements to individual, plant and operational safety. That’s because, Proscient 4.0 provides the first integrated view of the operational reality with a radically different, far more effective way to visualise and manage activity and risk.
It connects people and processes, and helps close-the-loop between operations, maintenance, engineering, HSE and other functions. It brings disparate data from systems, sensors and human-derived activity – delivering meaningful, actionable insights with powerful visualisation of risk and activity. By looking at three simple screens, everyone from the boardroom to the frontline can see what’s happening, when it’s happening and what’s driving risk – in real-time. Everyone can consistently make better-informed decisions to help reduce costs and risk and improve productivity overall.
The power of the Proscient platform lies in its ability to provide people with actionable insight to make better, more informed operational decisions. As an integrated, digital platform, Proscient 4.0 provides organisations with a richer, deeper picture of the operational reality as organisations scale its capabilities. It connects previously disparate business processes providing a tangible, practical means to close-the-loop between HSE, maintenance, engineering and other departments in ways that haven’t been possible until now.
With Proscient 4.0 organisations can:
• Connect the status of safety-critical equipment and processes to its impact on operational and process safety risk
• Access a 360° view of the operational reality to optimise the schedule against risk
• Transform complex data into meaningful information – ensuring everyone has the right information, at the right time to make better HSE and operational decisions
Recent client recognition:
* Chevron North Sea selected Proscient to make digital operational. “With ORM (Proscient Operational Risk Management), it’s the first time we’ve linked our safety case to deviations and management systems”.
* Saudi Aramco is implementing Proscient in its new Jazan refinery in support of its effort to create the world’s first ‘digital refinery’.
* BASF are underpinning their global Safe Work 4.0 initiative with Proscient to help them reduce risk, increase productivity, and lower costs across frontline operations.
* Petronas has chosen Proscient to support their digital vision and better connect process safety to their frontline operations

Company: Rheintacho UK
Products: ATEX Certified mechanical Hand Tachometer & ATEX Certified mechanical Tachometers (Full range 60mm to 200mm)
Description of application
Our potential customer contacted us requiring an ATEX approved eddy-current tachometer with an indicator and an integrated gearbox which also needed to be ATEX approved for a mixing application of powder. The customer produced powder coating mixing units. The agitator in the mixing tank is driven by a pneumatic motor to which our tachometer and gearbox had to be fixed in order to measure the rotational speed of the mixer.
As we did not have anything ATEX approved at the time of inquiry, which was in Jan 2018, we could only offer a non ATEX solution which they tested first. Afterwards, they were convinced that our solution was the right one, but also needed a solution for hazardous environments.
We decided to use this customer driven inquiry to inquire ourselves at our notify body to check the possibility of the ATEX approval for the UK and also for the rest of Europe. They informed us what would have to be done and we started the project 6 weeks later. In July 2018, we received the ATEX approval. Now we have over 16 different eddy current tachometers with a wide selection of standard gear boxes which are all certified in any possible combination.
In the meantime, the customer offers this instrumentation option to all of its customers inquiring about this mixer.
NEW PRODUCTS:
* ATEX Certified mechanical Hand Tachometer
* ATEX Certified mechanical Tachometers (Full range 60mm to 200mm)
PENDING:
* ATEX Certified Pocket LED Stroboscope

Company: Z-Tech Control Systems
Z-Tech has worked hard since 2009 to really beat their CO2 targets by going the extra mile to reduce miles, rationalising their fleet of vans to smaller and more efficient vehicles, beating the 15% reduction by 2013 and embracing electric technology.
In 2017/8 Z-Tech went further by facilitating a 6 month Highways England project which helped to trial electric vehicles at United Utilities and Thames Water
Z-Tech contributed further by installing the Thames Water charge point on a Sewage Treatment works, negotiating associated hazards.
