Understanding Ex d enclosures

Explosive atmospheres require special precautions and protection concepts to ensure the safe use of electrical equipment. The development of ignition protection concepts began in the early 19th century with the development of the first mine lamp. The use of ignition protection type Ex d revolutionised the safe use of electrical energy in mining. Accidents due to explosions in mines have been reduced to a remarkable level. Today Ex d housings are used in a wide range of industrial applications. These withstand the pressure of an explosion inside, the ignition energy is dissipated through the gap and does not escape to the outside.
