The plant belongs to food processing company ADM. The company said that the three workers were contractors and were in an adjacent silo to where the explosion happened. Around 40 firefighters attended the scene to put the fire out.

Several neighbouring business and buildings were evacuated with witnesses reporting that they heard a large blast which shook nearby buildings.

All operations at the plant have been shut down while the cause of the explosion is unknown.

The London Ambulance Service said an air ambulance was sent to the scene and that three people remain in hospital.
