Two killed and over one hundred rescued after offshore support vessel collides with rig

Two crewmembers of an offshore support vessel were killed near Malaysia on October 27 after the ship collided with an offshore oil rig operated by state oil company Petronas. The incident happened in the Baram field, 14 miles off the state of Sarawak on Borneo island.

In a statement, Petronas said that the vessel, the MV Dayang Topaz, was undertaking operational work at the Baram B oil platform for Petronas Carigali, when it made contact with platform structures after its anchor wire gave way during adverse weather. Petronas Carigali is the oil exploration unit of Petronas.
There were 187 personnel on board at the time of the incident and as a result of the collision, 125 personnel jumped overboard. The affected personnel were eventually rescued by emergency responders and evacuated however two fatalities were reported.
No marine pollution is thought to have occurred during the accident.
Petronas said an investigation is currently underway and all relevant authorities have been informed of the incident.
