Three tug boats were used to extinguish the fire caused by the blast. It is unknown whether any oil leaked from the damaged pipeline during the incident. Pemex said that the situation was brought under control and that the refinery’s Emergency Response Plan was executed successfully.

Pemex said that oleophilic barriers have been installed at the site and that , apart from the affected pipeline, there have been no reports of damage or ill effects on personnel or the Dos Bocas facility itself. The oil company said that it would conduct an investigation to find the cause of the blast.

The incident follows another explosion at Pemex’s Cadereyta refinery in the northern state of Nuevo Leon on December 10 which caused five minor injuries. Pemex said that no one was injured in the incident, although the Nuevo Leon State Governor later reported that five people suffered injuries.
