Thermal power plant explosion kills three, injures three in Uzbekistan

Three people were killed and three others were injured by an explosion at a thermal power plant in Uzbekistan on January 20. The blast happened at 11:42 local time in the fifth power unit of the Novo-Angren plant in the east of the country.

Uzbekistan’s Emergency Situations Ministry said in a statement that the dead and wounded were service personnel carrying out preventative maintenance work in Unit 5 of the plant. The explosion is reported to have happened after a build-up of coal dust.

The plant in the town of Angren was not damaged by the explosion. The Emergency Situations Ministry said that an investigation has been opened to find the exact cause of the blast.
