Turkish-Iranian power plants in next three years

02 September 2008

Turkey and Iran’s relationship has strengthened following an investment of US$3.5 billion by Turkey into Iran’s South Pars gas field. This new relationship has lead to plans to build three Turkish-Iranian power plants. This will be particularly beneficial to Turkey, who as a net importer of energy often faces shortages, especially in winter, when consumption of electricity rises and supplies fall.

The plants are expected to be built and producing electricity in the next three years. Each plant will have a capacity of 2000 MW. Iranian reserves will provide the 10 billion cubic metres of natural gas consumed by the power plants each year. The plants are being built in eastern Turkey, and Tabriz in Iran, the location of the third plant has not yet been decided. Turkey has also planned a 10,000 megawatt hydroelectric power plant in Iran.
