Louisiana chemical plant explosion injures five people

An explosion at a chemical plant in Louisiana, US injured five people on September 27. The incident occurred at the Westlake petrochemical plant near the city of Lake Charles in the southwest of Louisiana.

The blast, which occurred late in the evening, injured five people according to officials. All five, who were contractors at the plant, were taken to hospital for medical treatment. Local news initially reported that six people were injured, however officials later corrected the number. Four of the injured were released from hospital after a few hours.

The explosion caused a fire to break out which was later extinguished by firefighters. According to NBC news, the unit at the plant where the incident happened is used for the production of ethylene and was offline at the time of the explosion due to planned maintenance.  

Local officials have opened an investigation into the cause of the blast.
According to its website, the Westlake plant manufactures and supplies petrochemicals, polymers and building products.
