A total of 64 workers were inside the mine when the explosion occurred at around 08:30 local time. Six people died at the scene while two others were treated for injuries, Kazakhstan’s Emergencies Ministry said in a statement.

The Ministry said that the incident was likely a methane explosion and that all production at the mine has been stopped. An investigation commission headed by Minister of Emergency Situations Yuri Ilyin visited the scene and has begun looking into the causes behind the blast.
