Birds of a feather flock together: Smart-Ex® 02 and forward-looking smart glasses make up a skillful ecosystem

For a wide range of industry applications, the ECOM Instruments Smart-Ex® 02 together with the Visor-Ex® 01 smart glasses make up an intelligent ecosystem: The intrinsically safe smartphone convinces with powerful features as well as with an optimised accessory concept. With the Android™ 11 operating system, the smartphone works particularly quickly, securely and efficiently and the intuitive user interface enables an optimal application experience.
A versatile accessory concept (belt clip, hand strap, chargers and docking station) ensures easy carrying, attachment and charging of the smartphone Smart-Ex® 02 from Pepperl+Fuchs brand ECOM Instruments. In addition, the device can be supplemented with numerous other coordinated peripheral devices such as headsets, microphones, scanners – or the new smart glasses Visor-Ex® 01 from ECOM. The combination of the intrinsically safe smartphone ECOM Smart-Ex® 02 as a computing unit and a pocket unit with replaceable battery for power supply creates for Visor-Ex® 01 an intelligent ecosystem for a wide range of applications like digital workflows, maintenance procedures under the guidance of a remote support expert, who can give instructions and guidance with precision seeing what is happening through the eyes of the technician. In addition, pick-by-vision is a common scenario especially in logistics.
A total of three integrated cameras transform Visor-Ex® 01 into the remote expert’s bionic eye. Two 16-megapixel cameras are centrally positioned to depict the wearer’s natural field of vision – this way remote support views what is happening from the same angle and perspective as the mobile worker. A secondary camera offers a 6x optical zoom for zooming without loss of quality and scanning of barcodes and QR codes.
By connecting the smart glasses Visor-Ex® 01 to the Smart-Ex® 02, users can continue to use the tried-and-tested smartphone for hazardous areas without restriction. And they benefit from all the advantages and security features and controls of the Android 11 operating system: the simple integration and use of apps via the smart phone as well as over-the-air updates. By using the Smart-Ex® 02 in combination with Visor-Ex® 01, the user has no implementation or adaptation effort and benefits in terms of his familiar user experience from the use of already existing apps. As a perfect complement, the smart glasses enable freehand operation for a mobile worker. The distribution of functions across the individual system components helps to minimise the weight of the headset unit – without sacrificing performance, connectivity or battery life. The unique concept for accessories and peripherals ensures full compatibility with existing and future ECOM products, example given the Visor-Ex 01 smart glasses.
A successful connection
The smartphone ECOM Smart-Ex® 02, which in its role as the central computing unit of the smart glasses performs the image processing and data transfer functions connected by a USB cable to the headset unit. For power and data transmission, the headset unit is connected via coaxial cable to the pocket unit, which is attached to the mobile worker's body. The wired connection between the headset unit, the pocket unit and the smartphone guarantees reliable connectivity and thus uninterrupted communication in harsh environmental conditions that could push wireless connections such as Bluetooth to their limits.
On the Smart-Ex® 02 smartphone, configurable Android keys are available for individual assignment, while dedicated keys for PTT and alarm functions ensure swift communication in case of emergency. A multi-functional mounting plate concept ensures easy carrying, mounting and charging. Complemented with innovative peripherals such as the intrinsically safe Cube 800 thermal video camera, the Smart-Ex 02 supports the mobile worker in a wide range of tasks and provides future-proof solutions.
Android Enterprise Recommended for the Smart-Ex® 02 offers consistent, easy deployment and management of mobile solutions through hardware and operating system support, guaranteed Android upgrades and regular security patches.
