Eight people injured in explosion at military explosives plant in France

An explosion at a military explosives production plant in Bergerac, southwest France, injured eight people on August 3. The incident occurred at an upper tier Seveso site belonging to military explosives producer Eurenco.

The explosion in the Dordogne region of France happened at around 14:00 local time. Firefighters were immediately called to the scene and managed to contain the fire which was extinguished by 16:00, local officials said. A total of eight people were injured with several of them being taken to hospital. One of the injured was reported to be in a life-threatening condition.
Officials said that several explosions were reported at the site although the initial cause remains unknown. The incident was contained to the site itself and is reported to have started in an area that contained nitrocellulose. Eurenco produces explosives, propellants and fuels for military and civil use.
Due to the hazardous materials stored and used at the site, it is called as an upper tier Seveso site.
