According to local officials, steam was unexpectedly released from a valve at the paper mill at around 13:30 local time. Four employees were injured and suffered steam burns. Two of the workers were airlifted to hospital.

The Roanoke Rapids fire department said that two workers had been treated and released at the scene while the other two injured employees were continuing to receive treatment at a regional medical facility. The employees’ union, United Steel Workers, said that it was supporting those affected and their families.

Fire officials said that an investigation into the incident had been opened and that the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) would likely open its own investigation.
