LAFD was called to the site in Wilmington, located within Los Angeles’ Harbour Region, at around 07:50 local time. Firefighters were able to mitigate the hazardous material risk and a total of four patients were transported to local medical facilities, the fire department said.

One of the injured was in a serious condition and was rescued with the use of a basket/stretcher that was lowered by a rope system to the ground level of the refinery.

Marathon's Wilmington refinery has a capacity of 363,000 barrels per calendar day (bpcd) and manufactures cleaner-burning California Air Resources Board (CARB) gasoline and CARB diesel fuel, as well as conventional gasoline, distillates, petroleum coke, anode-grade coke, chemical-grade propylene, fuel-grade coke, heavy fuel oil and propane.
