Explosion kills six at Iranian coal mine

An explosion in a coal mine killed six people in northern Iran on 3 September. Iranian state media reports that several miners became trapped underground after the blast with search and rescue efforts being carried out overnight.

The explosion happened in a mine located near the city of Damghan in Iran’s north. The IRNA state news agency said the blast occurred around 400 metres underground, trapping six workers. The cause of the explosion is unknown.

Emergency services rushed to the scene where search and rescue efforts to find the six missing workers began immediately. Working through the night, rescuers found the six workers in the morning of 4 September but confirmed that all had died.

The bodies were recovered while an investigation was opened to determine the circumstances surrounding the explosion.
