The explosion occurred at around midday in the town of Casalbordino in Italy’s Abruzzo region. Emergency services attended the scene and confirmed that three people had died. Several people were also injured by the blast, however officials did not announce how many.

Esplodenti Sabino is currently under investigation in relation to another explosion that happened at the factory in December 2020. A preliminary hearing related to that incident had been due to start on 14 September.
