Oil pump station explosion kills one in US

A 71-year old man was killed after an explosion at an oil pumping station in Michigan, US on 5 February. The incident happened at around 15:50 local time at a site owned by Trak Oil Company in Port Huron.

The Cass County Sheriff's Office said in a statement that the Penn Township Fire Department was called to the scene of an explosion at a petroleum pumping station shortly before 16:00. Emergency services had been called after residents reported hearing a loud explosion that shook nearby homes.

Officials said that early investigations show two men had been working on an oil tank when it exploded and caused a fire. One of the men 71-year old Charles Lawrence was confirmed to have died at the scene. The second man, 38-year old Kevin Lawrence, suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital.

Police said the incident will be investigated by the Michigan State Police Fire Marshal and the Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy. Michigan State Police, Central Cass Fire Department, Elkhart City Fire Department, SEPSA Ambulance and SMCAS Ambulance also attended the scene to assist local emergency service personnel.

The incident remains under investigation.
