Baofeng Energy, which is based in Shanghai, produces chemicals from coal. The incident happened at one of its manufacturing plants in China’s Ningxia province.

Emergency services were called to the scene where two people were confirmed to have died. Four others were rushed to hospital with serious injuries. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the explosion has been opened, local authorities said.

China has a poor history of process safety related incidents in recent years. Recent incidents include the 2015 explosion in the port city of Tianjin that killed 173 people. More recently, an explosion left six people dead in the northwestern Chinese province of Gansu in June 2022. The incident, which also injured eight people, happened at a pesticide factory in the city of Lanzhou.
