Oil tanker explosion kills five, injures 15

An explosion aboard an oil tanker off the Indonesian coast killed five crewmembers and injured 15 others on 7 August. The incident happened as the tanker was sailing near the island of Tepekong near the eastern coast of Bali, authorities said.

Indonesian police said they received reports of a fire and explosion aboard the tanker, Elisabet Satu, at around 03:00 local time. Fireboats and rescue crews were immediately sent to assist the ship’s crew.

According to reports, the incident started after an explosion occurred in the accommodation area of the tanker which was followed by a second explosion and fire in the engine room. Of the 21 crewmembers, five were confirmed to have died at the scene while 15 others suffered injuries. Three of the injured were rushed to hospital with severe burns to 80% of their bodies.

Indonesia police said he cause of the first explosion is unknown, however an investigation has been opened.
