Wiring reduced to single Profibus cable in ATEX applications

04 March 2009

Burkert’s Type 8650 AirLINE-EX valve system offers reduced design, installation, validation and operating costs in ATEX applications. The system integrates directly into the Siemens ET200iSP Profibus DPV1 distributed I/O system, combining digital pneumatic output modules with integrated electronic analogue and digital I/O.

The resulting system uses a single fieldbus node, and is suitable for installation in Zone 1/21, with electronic I/O and actuation/air connection possibilities into Zone 0/20. This system concept also allows for redundancy of both the bus coupler and power supply module.

The 8650 system offers the way forward for control system design in hazardous areas; its cost effective integration of pneumatic and electronic control technologies and advanced Profibus DPV1 communications relieves the control engineer of the task of installing the many special expensive electrical junctions and terminations required by conventional field wired systems in ATEX areas.

The modular concept of the 8650 system offers options of valve functionality, size and fluidic connection. The system allows up to 48 Burkert EExia solenoid valves to be seamlessly combined with Siemens ET200iSP EExia/ib electronic digital and analogue I/O modules in single distributed I/O assemblies. These offer extensive facilities for remote parameter setting and diagnostics, the ability to “Hot -Swap” valves and electronic I/O modules under Ex- conditions, and the facility for easy system expansion at a later date.
