Explosion protection in the aerosol industry

26 May 2009

The requirement for Atex-certified products in traditional petrochemical environments is well documented. The risk of explosion in dusty environments such as flour mills is also widely known.

It may not be immediately obvious that a process such as the filling of the humble aerosol canister could demand such an approach.

Because just about any material, if divided finely enough and exposed to the right (or wrong!) conditions, can become explosive.

World-leading manufacturer of machinery for the household and cosmetic aerosol industries, DH Industries of Laindon, Essex, are familiar with these problems.

When faced with the challenge of providing visual signalling on an aerosol filling line they were building for a major manufacturer of household products, they turned to Werma.

Werma, one of the market leaders in signal technology, were able to offer the solution. The 741 series signal tower pro-vides full protection against explosion without compromising the signalling effect. The bright LEDs give immediate 360° indication of the production line status and, with a typical life of 100,000 hours, there are no maintenance issues. The inte-gral Zener barrier simplifies installation. Its compact size enables it to be fitted precisely where required.
