Keep your personnel safe in potentially explosive atmospheres

OCS Training Institute has become the only facility in the U.S. accredited to offer international-standard CompEx training and certification for electrical or technical personnel working in potentially hazardous or explosive atmospheres. OCS hazardous electrical area training is designed for all workplaces in which gas, dust or other materials can create hazardous or potentially explosive environments.
Already the adopted standard for several offshore drilling companies, OCS’s courses are also appropriate for onshore and offshore petrochemical plants and refining plants; distilleries, sugar plants and flour mills; paint spraying plants; mining; fuel and hazardous substance transport and distribution.
“Failure to ensure safe working practices has resulted in the ignition of explosive gases or dust clouds leading to injury and fatalities across numerous industries,” said Wayne Mayo, OCS Training Institute project & training manager. “Written, defined standards exist in almost every country worldwide, but establishing a comprehensive and proactive hazardous area electrical equipment program can be daunting and assuring that maintenance personnel understand the principles of hazardous areas, hazardous atmospheres, ignition sources and protection techniques requires comprehensive hands-on safety training.”
Recognising the importance of safety training in such environments, CompEx was established in 1994 as the international standard jointly developed by the Engineering Equipment and Materials Users’ Association (EEMUA) and JTL, the leading training provider to the building services engineering sector. The training is accredited by JTL which is supported by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in the United Kingdom.
“OCS is the only training institute in the United States whose courses are accredited to EEMUA and JTL’s international standards,” said Tony Scott, technical training manager for OCS Training Institute. “OCS uses a two-pronged approach to assist companies to comply with relevant standards and maintain best-in-class competency in hazardous area electrical procedures.” Additionally, OCS can develop client-specific hazardous electrical area programs and will conduct periodic inspections to establish and maintain proactive electrical equipment programs.
