Alarm Trips undergo UK nuclear industry Emphasis assessment
24 November 2009
Moore Industries-International has completed the “Production Excellence” phase in the assessment of the STA Safety Trip Alarm and SPA Programmable Limit Alarm Trip in accordance with the Emphasis assessment developed by the UK nuclear industry.

Alarm Trips undergo UK nuclear industry Emphasis assessment
The Emphasis assessment method was established as part of a research and development project by the UK Control and Instrumentation Nuclear Industry Forum (CINIF). The method systematically asks questions and requires evidence to show compliance to the international functional safety standard IEC 61508, together with some extra requirements from the UK nuclear industry gained from their experience.
The STA already holds full certification for SIL2 compliance against IEC 61508; Parts 1, 2 and 3 (Functional Safety Management, Hardware and Software) by TUV Rheinland. However, the UK nuclear industry requires its own Emphasis examination, which is independently applied by specialist auditors, such as Adelard LLP.
The UK nuclear industry requires a two-legged process that substantiates devices for potential use in nuclear safety-critical and safety-related applications. “Production Excellence” is one leg of the process. The second leg, “Independent Confidence Building,” requires the user to develop an “independent” safety argument for a specific application of the device. The argument must be heavily supported by testing and evidence.
In addition to the STA and SPA alarms, Moore Industries 535 Process Controller has also undergone the Emphasis assessment.
