The Energy Institute (EI) maintains a suite of publications for use in the petroleum and allied energy industry sectors. One of the most established publications is Model code of safe practice Part 15: Area classification code for installations handling flammable fluids (Part 15), the purpose of which is to provide a methodology for the classification of areas according to the likelihood of a flammable atmosphere being present.

This presentation focuses on the forthcoming publication Model code of safe practice Part 1: The selection, installation, inspection, and maintenance of electrical and non-electrical apparatus in hazardous areas (Part 1). This should be viewed as a companion publication to Part 15, as it provides guidance on the management of apparatus used in hazardous areas so as to prevent the ignition of any flammable atmosphere. It provides updated guidance on apparatus selection, installation, inspection, maintenance and operation in hazardous areas, and provides cross-references to further information

This paper will be presented at HazardEx 2010
