25 May 2010
Sira has recently received notification to add software to its range of accredited Functional Safety certification services. The accreditation, awarded by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS), confirms Sira as a leading provider of Functional Safety services, and the only body in the world to hold UKAS-accreditation for software assessment to Part 3 of the functional safety standard, IEC 61508.

IEC 61508 Software Accreditation - a World First
IEC 61508 Functional Safety
Functional Safety is about a system or equipment performing specified functions to a defined level of reliability in order to control risks associated with hazardous processes or machinery. The amount of risk control needed determines the 'Safety Integrity Level' (SIL) of the system.
The addition of software certification to Sira's existing range of UKAS-accredited Functional Safety services now means Sira provides one of the most comprehensive ranges of Functional Safety services to the market, which includes product approval for 'smart' instrumentation used for achieving functional safety.
All Sira Functional Safety certificates carry an internationally-recognised accreditation mark, helping our clients to leverage sales worldwide and providing them with a competitive edge in a growing market.
Sira has been closely involved in Functional Safety since IEC 61508 was first published over 10 years ago and received its first accreditation from UKAS in 2001 for the management processes to Part 1 of the Standard, closely followed by hardware to Part 2.
