Flameproof ATEX and IECEx barrier glands

13 October 2010

Flexicon has launched a range of flameproof ATEX and IECEx Ex d barrier glands, approved to the latest ATEX and IECEx standards, for use with its liquid tight conduit systems in hazardous areas.

The flameproof barrier gland can be used for Ex d, Ex e and Ex t applications; in Zone 1 and Zone 2 areas where group A, B or C gases are present and Zones 21 and 22 where explosive dust may be present. The gland does not add to the temperature of the enclosure so it can be used with all temperature classes.

Used with the company’s liquid tight conduit range, it provides the market with systems that boast the highest levels of ingress protection of IP66, IP67, IP68 and IP69K. Available across a wide range of sizes, from 16mm to 63mm diameter, they also offer a high mechanical strength and can be used with individual cores or oversheathed cable.

The new glands are also shorter and simpler to install than competitor solutions. Everything required is in a single pack, including protective gloves and the two-part epoxy compound used to form the barrier seal. The glands are manufactured from nickel-plated brass for improved corrosion resistance and aesthetics.

Says Ian Gibson, Flexicon’s technical director: “We have designed these glands to be used with any of our liquid tight conduit systems. This effectively provides the specifier with a far wider choice of systems for use in hazardous areas than they have had in the past.

“Using conduit provides multiple cable protection so that expensive specialist cables are not needed. Depending on the conduit selected, it also provides additional protection such as EMC shielding, impact or crush resistance and corrosion and oil resistance.”
