Flagship European gas storage project

Global diversified energy services company Senergy has been awarded a significant contract by Abu Dhabi National Energy Company PJSC (TAQA) to work on a flagship onshore underground natural gas storage project which will significantly enhance the security of energy supply in the Netherlands and other parts of Europe.

Global diversified energy services company Senergy has been awarded a significant contract by Abu Dhabi National Energy Company PJSC (TAQA) to work on a flagship onshore underground natural gas storage project which will significantly enhance the security of energy supply in the Netherlands and other parts of Europe.

Senergy is to support TAQA on its pioneering Bergermeer Gas Storage project in the Alkmaar region of the Netherlands, which on completion will be Europe’s largest third party access natural gas storage facility with an initial working volume of 4.1 billion cubic metres.

Bergermeer Gas Storage is currently being developed according to schedule and commercial operations are expected to start in 2013.

The scope of Senergy’s contract on the development, which involves drilling 14 new wells, is to undertake pre-operational work by providing front end engineering and design (FEED) verification and detailed design for managed pressure drilling (MPD) services.

A key part of the MPD undertaking will see Senergy harness its reputation for innovation and technical excellence by implementing a pioneering solution using proprietary technology.

Peter Taylor, director of engineering at Senergy, said; “The contract plays to our core strengths of technical expertise and innovation, underpinned by our growing experience in gas storage projects. It also strengthens our presence in continental Europe, which further supports our strategy for international growth.”

Senergy assisted TAQA’s UK subsidiary in the transfer of its UKCS assets from Shell in 2008/2009 and now works as an integrated team in TAQA’s UK subsurface and wells department. This contract reinforces Senergy’s long-standing relationship with TAQA in the UK and underlines the value of Senergy’s integrated services including its specialist personnel, technical expertise and superior systems and procedures.

Senergy also has a strong track record in gas storage projects and is currently playing a key role in the front end engineering design for the Gateway Gas Storage project in the East Irish Sea, one of most ambitious developments of its kind in the UK.
