Volex Group plc, the global designer and manufacturer of high-performance interconnect solutions and power cords, has been selected by a major global telecoms solutions provider to deliver a package of copper cable assemblies to be used in the rollout of 3G network infrastructure in India. Volex will supply a total of nine types of cable assembly which will form part of the telecoms provider’s platform rollout across India, which includes 22 network areas operated by four telecoms companies.

Volex’s presence in India has evolved from the manufacture and supply of power cords in the late 1990’s to a more design-heavy offering of high speed copper cable assemblies into the telecoms sector; responding to the ever-increasing demand for mobile and broadband access in the region. As India continues to develop its telecoms infrastructure with the rollout of 3G base stations, Volex has developed its long-standing relationships with global manufacturers and solutions providers and now supplies a number of cable assemblies to support the extensive project, which is expected to continue into 2012.
Volex’s customer in this contract has a significant presence in the Indian market, and the 3G rollout project demands that it relies on a strong network of suppliers to offer high quality products in large quantities. The existing working relationship between the two companies reassured the global telecoms provider that Volex can be relied upon to deliver cable assemblies which meet exacting quality standards with a short lead time, due to the proximity of the manufacturing facilities in Chennai.
Volex is supplying a total of nine types of cable assemblies for the annual contract, including power cables to be implemented at base station sites as well as copper assemblies such as RJ45 signal connector plugs and high speed copper SFP and SFP+ assemblies, which are integrated with other intra-cabinet components at the client’s manufacturing facility.
Ramesh Subramanian, Country Head and Finance Director, Volex India, comments, “Cable assemblies for mobile base station equipment are relied upon to transmit increasing amounts of data at high speed, whilst maintaining low costs and signal integrity, and reducing heat loss. Volex has optimised its design and manufacturing process to provide the best-in-class crosstalk performance in the industry. As a result, the SFP+ for example, can support transmissions of 10Gbps over Ethernet while offering backwards compatibility to 1Gbps and low power consumption.”
Jeff Bierman, SVP at Volex concludes, “This design expertise, coupled with Volex’s ability to deliver large quantities rapidly, means that we are extremely well-placed to support this customer in projects such as these. The support offered by the local team in Chennai also makes Volex very responsive to the needs of clients and the quality to price ratio of our products is unmatchable for telecoms applications such as this.”
