Speed monitor calibration checker
08 September 2011
Elevators, screws and conveyors are routinely fitted with speed sensors to detect slippage or stoppage and provide a shut down signal to prevent costly damage to belts and drive systems. In ATEX areas, sensing is vital to minimise risk of fire or explosion due to risk of heat generation in the presence of hazardous dusts. Regular checking of sensors is highly desirable in all applications and essential in ATEX areas.

To achieve this, Synatel have designed and manufactured a portable, battery operated instrument which will reliably, accurately and rapidly check the function and calibration of their sensors and associated equipment, in situ and with minimal interference with plant operation. The system comprises the instrument and transducer.
To carry out a check, the pilot is inserted between the sensor and target and, on switching on; the system displays the measured speed without interfering with the operation of the system. The system can then be set to speed generation mode at which point it will override the target and feed in pulses at the measured rate. The speed can now be artificially raised or lowered and at the set point, the system will ‘trip out’ verifying the calibration setting and confirming that the entire system is functioning correctly.
