OPITO International recognises the safety champions of 2011

The shortlist for world-leading employers and training providers who have helped the global oil and gas industry enhance the safety of its workforce has been unveiled. The list of finalists sees a total of five organisations in with a chance at winning an OPITO Safety and Competency Award which will be announced during OPITO's conference in Abu Dhabi on 22 November.

The Awards seek to recognise employers who have helped improve safety and competency through the use of OPITO standards, as well as training providers who have improved their training delivery to ensure safe and competent workers.

The shortlisted finalists for the Employers Award are:
· Nabors Drilling International Limited
· India Projects Pvt. Limited
· RBG Limited

The winner will be the company that can best demonstrate the rationale for adopting OPITO standards and provide evidence of where the standards have resulted in improve safety and competence.

The shortlisted finalists for the OPITO Approved Training Providers Award are:
· Command/Wild Geese Solutions
· MSTS Asia Sdn Bhd (Johor Centre)

This award will go to the provider with the best staff development programme that can demonstrate innovation in learning and development.

OPITO Group Chief Executive officer David Doig said: "These awards are an opportunity to highlight those outstanding organisations and individuals who have shown great flair, innovation, creativity and vision in our industry in the last 12 months.These individuals and organisations have not only helped shape the industry's past but will be a vital part of driving forward its future."

This year's theme is 'Competence versus Compliance - how do we ensure a competent workforce that significantly improves safety as opposed to one which simply ticks the necessary boxes?'.

The OPITO Safety and Competence Conference 2011 will take place at the Rotana Hotel, Yas Island, Abu Dhabi on 22 November. This is the second annual event, and it will focus on how the industry can develop a more competent workforce that significantly improves safety rather than one which simply complies with legislation and best practice.

The keynote speaker for the event is Lord Cullen (pictured), author of the Cullen Report, an outcome of the Piper Alpha tragedy.

The conference will also offer delegates the opportunity to contribute to the continual evolution of world class industry practices that protect the workforce.
