Service ensures explosive safety

05 October 2011

TÜV SÜD Product Service has launched its ATEX Safety Service. This new service will reassure component and machinery manufacturers that their equipment complies with European Directive ATEX 95 - 94/9/EC and will be safe to use in potentially explosive environments.

The new ATEX Safety Service will also support end-users of machinery which operate a processing facility in a potentially explosive environment. They are required to comply with ATEX 137 - 99/92/EC (ATEX Workplace Directive) to reduce the risk to their workers in the explosive atmosphere.
Jean-Louis Evans, Managing Director of TÜV SÜD Product Service, said: "The 'explosion directive' has far reaching consequences for machinery and end-product manufacturers. Explosive atmospheres include apparently benign industries such as waste recycling and food processing, not just the more obvious ones such as oil and gas or chemicals. The legal repercussions are significant if they get this wrong and a service such as ours provides a simple route to ensure that they get it right."
Machinery manufacturers that use TÜV SÜD's new ATEX Safety Service will reduce time to market for new products and ensure that existing ones can continue to be sold legally. This is because as a Notified Body, TÜV SÜD can offer product certification of both electrical and non-electrical equipment under the ATEX Product Directive.
The new ATEX Safety Service will also support end-product manufacturers to interpret and comply with regulations to reduce the risk to their workers. Comprehensive site safety reviews include the identification of possible ignition sources, equipment inspection, as well as practical control and mitigation techniques.
The new TÜV SÜD ATEX Safety Service includes:
· Quality audits of facilities owned by component and machinery manufacturers
· Site safety engineering reviews for end-product manufacturers who operate potentially explosive processing plants
· Regulatory advice to help machinery and end-product manufacturers ensure that they comply with various country-specific regulations
