As demand for electronic instrumentation device increases in applications, which require equipment explosion protection to operate in hazardous environments such as chemical, oil or gas wells and refinery, it is the responsibility of companies and their design engineers to integrate protection and safety measures with minimum cost and less impact on the circuit operation.
Compliance with potentially explosive standards can be sometimes very difficult to meet due to non harmonization in standards in some countries, hence product approval may require combinations of different techniques or different levels of protection to provide the safety measures with respect to explosion risks and to meet a specific classification or category.
This paper discusses the use of safety devices as described in articles 1.2 of ATEX Directive 94/9/EC and section 3.10 of the ATEX Guidelines (Annex II) and their implementation in potentially explosive environments. It specifies the use of safety device, controlling and regulating devices that contribute to or required for the safe functioning of explosion protected equipments with respect to explosion risks.
It also studies the concept of EN 50495 for monitoring and controlling of potential ignition sources of explosion protected equipment by executing a safety function and forming a Safety Instrumented System.
