The use of infra-red temperature sensors in hazardous areas preventative maintenance - to be presented at HazardEx 2012

The use of infra-red temperature sensors in hazardous areas preventative maintenance. The paper begins by briefly discussing how relatively recent sensor development has made the use of infra-red technology a practical solution for the measurement of temperatures just above ambient.

The application of this technology to the measurement of surface temperatures in hazardous areas so as to prevent thermal ignition of gases is then discussed.

The example used is the monitoring of bearing temperature for both preventative maintenance and temperature ignition risk purposes. This system is compared to the requirements of CENELEC standard EN 50495 which outlines the requirements of protective systems used to minimise the risk of explosions.

The system used is intrinsically safe and the paper concludes by discussing the system certification . It is an interesting example of the combination of shunt diode safety barriers [chosen for both measurement accuracy and safety] and ‘simple apparatus’.

The question of the use of apparatus at temperatures outside the normal ambient temperature range at risk from both spark and temperature ignition is considered.
