There are many fundamental steps to producing safe working concepts but often overlooked
is the vital role of “Partnerships”. Without these the path to safety will become difficult and
in a number of cases failure will occur.

Legislation quite often puts the burden on safety on the User. Unqualified or not able to fully understand the risks associated with a process, the User might employ a Consultant. The Consultant becomes the first Partner.
Key actions are identified but rarely is a basis of safety provided at this stage. A Designer often determines this. If the User is not able or qualified to understand the concepts of the safety systems and devices designed into a process they would rely on the technical knowledge of the Supplier. When it comes to installation of the equipment the User may employ electrical and mechanical Installers. Once installation is complete the safety systems and components then need to be maintained.
All the way through this process the building of partnerships is vital. Many often process installation Suppliers ask “will I be liable for...”. The answer I give them is that the responsibility for the safe working of the process is shared from the top to bottom and you should be one of many Partners not the sole owner of the problem.
