Eleven injured in Ghana steel plant explosion

08 February 2012

Eleven workers of Special Steel Ltd, an Indian-owned steel manufacturing company based in Tema, east of Accra, yesterday sustained various degrees of injury in an explosion on 31 January.

The injured were part of the night shift at the factory and were working in the furnace department when the incident occurred. Local reports say the accident could have been due to an excessive load in the furnace, and the injured staff were not wearing protective gear.

Last year, one employee died and 13 were injured in an explosion at another steel manufacturing company, Western Steel and Forging Ltd, also based near Tema.
