05 March 2012

Baseefa is a notified body for the ATEX Directive, applying conformity assessment modules to all categories of equipment and protective systems for installation in Europe, as well as an IECEx Certification Body and Test Laboratory, helping UK manufacturers export around the world
SGS says the acquisition will enable it to offer expanded services in the verification and testing of products that may be susceptible to potentially explosive environments.  The staff and knowledge that this acquisition brings allows SGS to diversify the services offered to clients.
Baseefa has operated as a private company since 2001. Prior to that, it was a part of the UK government’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE).  The company’s staff have unmatched experience in the field of the certification of hazardous area equipment and related services.
“This provides a number of exciting opportunities for both Baseefa staff and for our customers, as we will benefit from SGS’ global reputation and network of laboratories, as well as its existing expertise in our field” said Baseefa’s general manager, Ron Sinclair.
“The existing management team remains in place, dedicated to retaining our historical level of service, and to building on it wherever possible. We look forward to continuing to serve the needs of our customers in the future.”
Chris Kirk, Chief Executive Officer of SGS, said:  “With this acquisition, we add new activities in our Consumer Testing Services. It is part of our strategy to diversify our offering and provide these services to our global network.”
SGS is the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company, with more than 70,000 employees in a network of over 1,350 offices and laboratories around the world.
