13 March 2012

Drug production at the Boucherville plant of pharmaceuticals manufacturer Sandoz has been halted by a fire in a ceiling above the plant’s boiler room. The fire broke out on March 4, and partial production is not expected to resume until later this week. No date has been given for a return to full production

Some 90% of injectable medicines are supplied from this plant to Canadian emergency and operating rooms, further adding to drug shortage problems in hospitals in Canada.
The US Food and Drug Administration last year discovered serious deficiencies at the Boucherville plant, which Sandoz had been working to rectify over the last two months.
