Hello, and welcome to HazardEx

16 March 2012

A big hello from me, your new editor. My general background has been in industry and business journalism, and the last few weeks have seen me on a steep learning curve familiarising myself with the world of hazardous area environments. I’d particularly like to thank everyone at the HazardEx event in Harrogate at the end of February for providing me with such a thorough overview of the sector.

One thing is already clear to me. This is a vitally important sector undergoing profound change: principally regulatory, but also in terms of technology and human issues. An example: the first corporate manslaughter cases have now passed through the courts. How exposed to prosecution are senior managers, and what must they do to ensure full compliance with the latest regulations? This is an area we will be looking at closely over the coming months.

Hopefully I will have met a good few of you in Harrogate, and will meet many more at future shows and meetings over the year. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with material you think would be of interest to our readership, and also your opinions and suggestions for our website, journals and newsletters.

If you don’t tell me, I won’t know!
