West Yorkshire factory explosion

08 May 2012

An oil-powered boiler at Mars Petcare in Birstall, West Yorkshire, exploded on April 26, slightly injuring an engineer working in the boiler room. He was checked over at the scene by the ambulance service and not taken to hospital, according to the Batley & Birstall News.

The fire that subsequently broke out at the building - which is located 200 metres from Ikea and other shops at Birstall Shopping Park - was extinguished by firefighters.

Witnesses said there was a very loud explosion that shook nearby buildings.

A spokesman for the company, which makes Pedigree dog food and Wiskas cat food, said: “Mars Petcare can confirm that there was a small blowout in one of the boiler rooms of its Birstall factory. Nobody has been injured.”

The premises were evacuated as standard, but the building was soon declared safe and everyone returned to work an hour later.
