10 May 2012

The prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise for International Trade 2012 has been won by LMK Thermosafe Ltd of Haverhill, Suffolk. The company manufactures industrial drum and container heaters for use in potentially explosive atmospheres, and now exports the majority of production from its Haverhill headquarters to over 60 countries, with export earnings having increased by 85% over three years.

The heaters are used in diverse manufacturing operations ranging from melting of ingredients for waxes, resins and paints, toothpastes, cosmetic gels and creams, automotive oil blending facilities and crude oil extraction systems through to processing of honey, syrups and vegetable oils for cereal bars, yoghurts and sauces in the food industry.

Managing Director Mark Newton said: “This Award recognises many years of hard work by our talented and dedicated staff. Any export business is hard won, and our continuing growth in every continent is particularly due to the efficient and high quality technical support given to our overseas customers and marketing partners. In most countries there are strong local competitors, so although a small business, we succeed by offering a better total package of customer service, support and product availability. We have responded to international market needs and developed new products that meet the technical standards and certifications required for those markets. As an SME, it is particularly pleasing to have been contributing in a small way to the resurgence of UK manufacturing exports, and to be safeguarding employment for our staff even in tough economic times.”

Many of the company’s customers are very large multi-national corporations requiring the highest standards of product quality and safety in manufacturing operations where there are significant risks due to the presence of explosive gases and dusts. Winning business in such environments is normally only achieved after on-site product tests and stringent evaluations against competing technologies.

The flagship THERMOSAFE Induction Drum Heater continues to be accepted as the solution of choice for projects in the petrochemical, pharmaceutical and food industries. Its energy efficiency, speed of heating and maintenance free operation all contribute to the product’s success.

To build export growth in recent years the Company has implemented specialist certification programmes and new product developments, broadening capability in wider geographic markets. The FARATHERM Base Heater and INTELIHEAT wrap-around IBC (bulk container) heater have both been launched to solve specific technical challenges in hazardous area applications and have gone on to global commercial success.
