Road tunnel blast in China kills 20

21 May 2012

Twenty people were killed in an explosion inside a road tunnel under construction in central China's Hunan province on May 19, according to Xinhua. A total of 24 people were working in the tunnel when the blast occurred and four were pulled out alive, including one in a critical condition, the Hunan provincial transport department said in a statement.

The site of the incident was in Yanling county, Zhuzhou city, on an expressway linking the counties of Yanling and Rucheng. The blast happened when a vehicle carrying explosives was unloading in the tunnel, and the authorities say an investigation into the cause is now under way.
