Three dead after Spanish olive oil plant blast

28 May 2012

Police dogs have discovered the remains of a third person who had been missing following the explosion of an olive oil processing plant on May 24 at Moraleja in the province of Caceres in southwestern Spain. Two others were injured in the blast, but neither is in a serious condition.

The blast caused the roof of the Industrias Oleícolas Sierra de Gata plant to collapse and created intense heat, which made firemen unable to commence rescue work until around three and a half hours after the conflagration was first reported.

Initial reports say an explosion in the processing area of the plant was followed by another in a fuel storage area.
