ADIPEC 2012 - The leading Middle East platform for oil and gas professionals

The 15th edition of the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC) will take place on 11 - 14 November 2012 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC). From 2013, ADIPEC will become an annual event.
The event has grown by more than 16% since 2008 to 35,000 sq.m. of exhibition space, over 1,600 exhibitors and more than 45,000 attendees.
The largest event for the Middle East oil and gas industry, ADIPEC is supported by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and the UAE's Ministry of Energy, under the patronage of the President of the United Arab Emirates, H. H. Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
There will be more than 306 regional and international speakers at the Middle East’s largest oil and gas industry conference, with more than 4,000 delegates attending the 50 technical sessions, five panel sessions and two executive sessions. The theme of this year’s conference is ‘Sustainable Energy Growth: People, Responsibility and Innovation’, and more than 1,500 paper submissions have already been received from 58 countries, compared to 1,100 in 2010.
The event is aimed at energy company managers and executives, strategy and planning heads, project managers, consultants, plant managers, environmental company executives, government and association representatives, engineers, technical managers, geologists, service company and operating company representatives, amongst many others.
Organised by the dmg Energy Group and the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), the conference has established itself as the leading platform for oil and gas professionals to share knowledge and expertise in the region. The executive committee includes Ali Al Jarwan, CEO, ADMA OPCO, Qasem Al Kayoumi, ADNOC, Ray Mitro, ZADCO, Khaled Buraik, Saudi Aramco, Salim Aufi, Petroleum Development Oman, Hosnia Hashim, Kuwait Oil Company. Hazardous Area International is a media partner of ADIPEC.
The ADIPEC Awards will be an important feature of the event, recognising organisations that have been successful in setting new standards of excellence within the MENA oil and gas sector.
Hosted by ADNOC, supported by the UAE’s Ministry of Energy and sponsored by JOGMEC and OMV, the Awards have five MENA categories: Best Oil and Gas Project, Best Oil and Gas Innovation or Technology, Best Oil and Gas HSE Project or Initiative, Best CSR Initiative and Best Oilfield/Gas Field Management Strategy.
A sixth category is open for international nominations: Best International Oil and Gas Project. There is also a distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award, which will recognize an outstanding individual who has shown a pioneering spirit and demonstrated inventiveness throughout his or her career.
The Regional Select Jury (RSJ) is comprised of well-known industry experts from major organisations including ADNOC Group, Saudi Aramco Bapco, KPC, PDO, Shell, Total, Taqa, Partex Oil&Gas, Schlumberger, Inpex, as well as a number of academic institutions and professional associations.
The event has many anciliary features to entertain, educate, develop and encourage networking. These include a technical conference, a dedicated Outdoor, Offshore and Marine section, a UAE oil and gas museum, new Middle East Petroleum Club and the latest edition of the well-respected PCIC Conference (see following article).
Exhibitors can display in the new Offshore and Marine halls, which provide water access, moorings and quayside exhibition space, a unique feature across the large global oil and gas events. In addition, products and services and hosted technical training sessions specific to the offshore industry are being added in 2012.
The newly created oil and gas outdoor area provides an ideal location to see the latest technologies on offer, from generators, heavy lift and high access to drilling platforms and pipeline innovations.
The Middle East Petroleum Club is for oil and gas industry VIPs and includes the use of an exclusive facility within the ADIPEC exhibition hall. Access to the Club will be through invitation, although nominations can also be made.
Another new feature will be the GCC Country Briefings, designed to provide an insight for oil and gas companies considering establishing operations in the Gulf region.
The series of briefings, to be held during the first two days of the exhibition, will consist of panels with representation from each of the six GCC countries. Each panel will consist of regional oil company members and consultants providing insights into the business climate, from a range of perspectives including legal, technical and governmental.

Ali Rashid Al-Jarwan, CEO at ADMA-OPCO and Chairman of this year’s ADIPEC Conference Executive committee, says the calibre of the conference presentations will be world class, and the increased number of abstract submissions received this year has led to the programme being extended.
“In 2012, more than any previous year, we have noticed that papers submitted for evaluation were of an exceptionally high quality, and were also received in greater volume. The extremely high standards of our selection process are reflected in the number of speakers and the technical quality of the final programme. The technical committees have had some difficult choices in their selection, but it has resulted in the strongest programme in the event’s history.”
Illustrating the wide reach of the conference programme, abstracts were received from 330 organisations across 58 individual countries. The top five organisations submitting abstracts were ADCO, Schlumberger, ADMA-OPCO, Saudi Aramco and ZADCO.
The panel of committee volunteers, working with the Society of Petroleum Engineers, which oversees the programme’s development and management, applied a stringent selection criteria in deciding which speakers would be chosen to present at the conference.
Of the 1,534 submissions received from across the globe, only 438 (28%) were selected. Taking place over the four days of the exhibition, the conference programme will cover Geosciences, Projects, Field Developments, Drilling and Completions, Maintenance, Integrity and Operations, along with Health, Safety and the Environment.
The organisers say ADIPEC 2012 will bring together the largest number of international speakers ever seen at a conference in the Middle East.
Exhibition
The exhibition’s host sponsor is ADNOC, strategic sponsor ARDECO, platinum sponsors ExxonMobil, JOGMEC, OilSERV and Total, gold sponsors KPC, JODCO, OMV, Oxy, Statoil and Dolphin Energy and silver sponsor Wintershall.
ADIPEC will have 13 national country pavilions, with the biggest representation from the US followed by Germany, Italy, China, UK, the Netherlands, Korea, Norway, France and a number of other countries.
Salman Abou Hamzah, exhibition manager at dmg::events, said the exhibition will be bigger and better than ever.
“The event has expanded significantly in recent years, thanks to the new state-of-the-art ADNEC venue. ADIPEC now fills all 12 halls and over 37,000 sq.m. floorspace. There will also be a new unique outdoor exhibition area which will include a 4000 sq.m. marquee and 2,000 sq.m. heavy equipment area. We anticipate show space will have grown by more than 22% since 2010 and exhibitor numbers will increase by more than 8% over the same period to reach 1,600.”
He said a number of the world’s oil and gas producing regions will be well-represented at ADIPEC.
“The number of international and regional exhibitors at ADIPEC is increasing on a yearly basis. A number of companies are collaborating with local distributors to market their products and services and more companies are joining from India, Russia, other Commonwealth of Independent States countries, Korea, the US and other regions.
“With 50% of the world’s oil reserves sitting here in the Middle East, this region is extremely important, and many of these exhibitors are opening offices in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Iraq and Bahrain.”

Event Chairman for ADIPEC 2012 Ali Al Jarwan, CEO of ADMA-OPCO, said:
“ADIPEC began as a biennial event in 1984 as a platform for oil and gas professionals to come together to network, discover new ideas, and debate our core industry issues. Over the years we have witnessed ADIPEC grow in stature, significance and size with every exhibition since. This growth is unabated. We continue to have a waiting list of exhibitors and require yet more space, and therefore there is a need for an annual platform.”
Mohammed Sahoo Al Suwaidi of GASCO, who has been appointed Chairman for ADIPEC 2013, said: “Understandably, with the oil and gas industry in the region growing rapidly and with an increasing focus on best practice, there has been a demand to make ADIPEC an annual event from 2013.”
ADIPEC 2013, taking place in November 2013, will have a strong focus on gas, reflecting its increasing share of the global energy mix and heightened regional demand for gas for power generation.
