One killed, one injured in Texas gas plant explosion

11 February 2013

One person was killed and another is in critical condition from an explosion at an industrial gas facility on February 9 in La Porte, Texas. Air Liquide, which operates the facility, said between 15 and 20 staff were on site when the explosion occurred. Witnesses heard several explosions at the plant, and the ensuing fire caused smoke to drift over the nearby city of Pasadena.

A shelter-in-place, where the local population is advised to remain in a protected location while the emergency services tackle the incident, was in place for two hours.
Investigators are trying to determine what caused the explosion. The Specialty Gas facility in La Porte houses industrial gases such as nitrogen and hydrogen that are used in the processing of  food, beverages and electronics.
