Chemical leak at Scottish whisky distillery

04 March 2013

On March 3 a chemical leak was reported at Diageo's Roseisle Distillery in Moray, North East Scotland. A spokesperson for the drinks company said: "I can confirm there was an incident involving a chemical leak at the bio-energy plant at the Roseisle complex."

The spokesman continued: "The incident was dealt with through the standard on-site emergency procedures and was quickly contained. No one was harmed in any way as a result of the incident. The distillery was unaffected and is fully operational as normal."

Opened in October 2010, the £40 million facility was the first of its scale to be opened in Scotland in over 30 years and was designed to build on best practice from Diageo’s other 27 malt and grain distilleries.

It has a production capacity of 10 million litres of spirit per annum and the majority of its by-products are recycled on site in the bio-energy facility, helping the distillery to generate most of its own energy and reduce potential CO2 emissions.
