Derbyshire factory explosion unleashes toxic cloud

13 May 2013

On May 10 a series of explosions and fire destroyed the former Thorntons chocolate factory at Belper in Derbyshire, leaving a thick pall of smoke over the immediate vicinity. Residents were warned to stay indoors and not to touch any debris amid a feared asbestos risk after an explosion at the derelict factory. There were no reported injuries.

A police investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire and health and safety inspectors are examining the site.
