SSE Thermal has announced it is developing a “first-of-a-kind” project in the Humber region in north east England which would unite hydrogen production, storage and power generation in one location by the middle of this decade....
Plans for two first-of-a-kind, low-carbon power stations in the UK’s Humber region have taken a significant step forward after SSE Thermal and Equinor submitted a planning (DCO) application. The plans, which could triple the UK’s hydrogen output, comprise one of the UK’s first power stations with carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology and the world’s first major 100% hydrogen-fuelled power station....
The Ferrybridge power station in Yorkshire will close by March 2016, UK energy utility SSE announced on May 20. The utility said the coal-fired plant was no longer economical, and that it would redeploy the 176 staff at the plant where possible. SSE said rising costs, the impact of environmental legislation and a forecast £100m loss over the next five years made the Ferrybridge site "unsustainable"....
On February 17 the UK government approved a 2,400 megawatt (MW) capacity wind generation project in the British sector of the North Sea. The 400-turbine Dogger Bank Creyke Beck project, being developed by the Forewind consortium, will cover 430 sq miles and is expected to generate enough electricity to power nearly 2m homes and support 900 full-time jobs....
Scottish Power has said it will look into doubling the capacity of its Cruachan hydro power station near Oban in Argyll. The company is to carry out a two-year feasibility study before deciding whether to go ahead with the project, probably in early 2016. The 440MW station is one of only four pumped storage hydro plants in the UK and plays a key role in balancing the country's electricity system. ...
UK energy regulator Ofgem has asked the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to rule on whether the Big Six energy suppliers' rises in prices and profits were due to lack of competition. This follows a report by the regulator which found "possible tacit co-ordination" on the size and timing of price rises, but did not accuse the major energy firms of colluding over prices....
On February 24 the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) announced the signature a multi-million pound front-end engineering design (FEED) contract with Shell to take the Peterhead gas carbon capture and storage (CCS) project into the next stage of development....
On August 7 the second largest offshore wind farm in the world, costing £1.3 billion and generating enough clean electricity to power over half a million homes, was officially opened by the Energy and Business Minister Michael Fallon. Greater Gabbard, off the Suffolk coast, has 140 turbines, and will double in size once the Galloper extension is completed in 2017....
