The government of the Netherlands apologised on March 2 for ignoring risks posed by earthquakes caused by production of natural gas in the northern province of Groningen. The apology follows a February 18 report by the country's independent Safety Board that found that the government, together with Royal Dutch Shell and Exxon, had put profits before safety in exploiting the Groningen gas field....
An explosion and fire in a gasoline processing unit at the Exxon Mobil refinery in Torrance, California, near Los Angeles slightly injured four workers and shattered windows of surrounding buildings, local authorities said. Torrance Mayor Patrick Furey told local television station KNBC that people who live near the refinery should take stay indoors and keep the windows closed....
On October 9 the World Bank’s ICSID tribunal awarded Exxon Mobil $1.6 billion compensation for its nationalised assets in Venezuela. The case relates to the 2007 takeover of a large heavy crude project in the Orinoco region by then president Hugo Chavez's government....
Under the latest round of US and European sanctions on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine, foreign oil companies have been barred from providing equipment, technology, or assistance to Russian oil projects. On September 20, Exxon Mobil issued a statement that the company was shutting down its joint project with Russian state-controlled oil giant OAO Rosneft in the Kara Sea, north of Siberia. ...
On April 21, ExxonMobil UK subsidiary Esso said it had shut one of the country's main underground fuel pipelines after police found a stash of diesel they believe was siphoned off by thieves. Police arrested two men in connection with the theft, with more than 30,000 litres of diesel allegedly involved....
According to a Reuters report, the consortium developing Kazakhstan's huge Kashagan oilfield has lodged an appeal against a 134.2 billion tenge ($737 million) fine by the local regional Kazakh authority for ecological damage at the site in the Caspian Sea. The fine adds to the long list of problems facing the North Caspian Operating Company (NCOC) consortium developing the oilfield....
Britain could receive nearly 16 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas to supply its depleted domestic gas supply market if plans by ExxonMobil and Qatar Petroleum to build a LNG export plant in the US go through. Reuters says the deal would see 15.6 million tonnes of LNG per year shipped from the proposed Golden Pass plant in Texas to the South Hook terminal in Wales....
An Arkansas state attorney general has announced that the ExxonMobil pipeline rupture that has leaked thousands of barrels of oil at Mayflower, central Arkansas, is “substantially larger” than initially believed, but that the size of the leak is still unknown. Some 22 evacuated residents have yet to be told when they can return to their homes....
Exxon's Pegasus pipeline, which has a 90,000 barrels per day (bpd) capacity of crude oil, was shut after the leak was discovered on March 29 near the town of Mayflower. The leak forced the evacuation of 22 homes. The pipeline was built in the 1940s and carries Canadian Wabasca heavy crude between Patoka, Illinois and Nederland, Texas....
A BBC report has claimed Russia is having to carry out a nuclear waste recovery programme in the seas to the north of the country to ensure oil and gas exploration in the area can proceed without undue risk....
