The UK’s National Grid Gas Transmission and National Grid Electricity Transmission have been granted £1.5m from Ofgem’s Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) for 13 innovation projects. The projects include innovative uses of hydrogen in the gas national transmission system and using satellite data analytics to further increase resilience of electricity network to the impacts of climate change....
A fire at a facility in Kent in the early hours of September 15 has forced the shutdown of a key electricity cable that imports power from France into the UK. In a statement, National Grid said that a fire at its IFA interconnector site in Sellindge, between Ashford and Folkestone, had been evacuated and that emergency services were in attendance. The shutdown of the cable comes as the UK experiences record high market prices for wholesale energy....
IFA2, the National Grid’s second electricity interconnector linking the UK and France, is now able to flow low carbon electricity between the two countries at full capacity. Wholesale power traders started buying capacity to transport power across the 149-mile subsea power cable, which stretches along the sea floor between Fareham, Hampshire in the UK and near Caen, Normandy in France, on January 20....
BP, Eni, Equinor, Shell, Total, and the UK’s National Grid have formed a new partnership, the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP), to develop the offshore infrastructure to transport and store millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions safely in the UK North Sea....
On October 15, utility company National Grid launched Britain’s latest interconnector, the IFA2, a 149-mile-long power cable that runs along the seabed between Portsmouth in the UK to Caen in France sharing surplus clean energy between the two countries....
June 10 will mark two months since the UK last generated electricity at a coal fired power station – the first time since the country’s first industrial revolution. The National Grid has said that midnight on June 10 would mark 61 days (or 1,464 hours) since the last coal generator came off the system....
Britain’s energy regulator Ofgem has asked National Grid for an urgent report into the power cut which caused chaos across the country on the evening of August 9. National Grid, said the power cuts happened after a rare and unusual issue which had led to the almost simultaneous loss of output from two generators....
Power generation from Britain’s wind farms hit a record 14.2 gigawatts (GW) on March 17, National Grid said. This represented 34.2% of domestic electricity generation at 1430 GMT that day, the country’s power grid operator said....
Between 21 June to 22 September, 52% of electricity generation was met by low carbon sources, compared with about 35% four years ago. Growth in solar, offshore and onshore wind has contributed significantly to the increased share of generation from renewable sources. June 7 also became the first day when over half of the UK’s energy came from renewables....
The UK could rely on other countries for 93% of its gas supplies by 2040 if there is weak economic growth and not enough money available to support domestic gas production, National Grid said on July 5. This import forecast is a part of the British grid operator's "Slow Progression" scenario, one of four potential scenarios in its "UK Future Energy Scenarios"....
